Jasper
There are many types of jasper beyond the well-known and common red jasper, distinguished by color, pattern, and origin.
Yellow jasper
Ranges from bright yellow to mustard tones. Its color comes from goethite or iron oxide. Most yellow jasper comes from Russia, India, Venezuela, and Australia.
Blue jasper
Very rare. The blue color is due to manganese oxide. Some of the finest blue jaspers are mined on Mount Ettutkan, Staryi Sibay, Bashkortostan, Russia. A white stone with large blue rock inclusions from Pakistan is called K2 blue jasper but is not true jasper.
Ocean jasper
Not a true jasper but a chalcedony. This stone features round spheres embedded in the mineral and is uniquely found in only two locations, about ten miles apart, on Madagascar's northwest coast.
Blood jasper or heliotrope
A dark green jasper with red hematite spots resembling blood splatters. The green color comes from chlorite and pyroxene inclusions. Blood jasper mainly comes from India, with smaller deposits in Brazil, Australia, China, Madagascar, and the United States.
Dalmatian jasper
Black spots on white, like a Dalmatian puppy. There is also a rare purple Dalmatian jasper, characterized by black spots on a purple background.
Rainforest jasper
A green rhyolite with yellow, white, and red inclusions.
Fancy jasper
Features colors of blue, earth green, rust red, beige, and pink.
